What is Babbitt metal?

Babbitt metal is a tin-based or lead-based bearing alloy with anti-friction properties. Because of its white color, it is also known as "white alloy".

It is composed of a mixture of metals such as tin, lead, antimony, and copper.
It is mainly used to manufacture high-speed, heavy-duty bearings to reduce friction and provide excellent impact and wear resistance, thereby reducing friction and extending equipment life.
Applied to
  • Bearings for heavy industrial equipment, such as large equipment in cement, steel, chemical, papermaking, and petroleum machinery industries.
  • Aerospace: Bearings for aircraft engines and gas turbines, due to their high temperature resistance and thermal stability.
  • Marine engineering: Equipment such as diving platforms and offshore drilling platforms, resistant to seawater and corrosive media.
  • Metallurgy and glass manufacturing: Equipment such as rolling mills and drawing machines, capable of handling high temperatures and corrosive gases.
  • Food processing and pharmaceuticals: Equipment such as centrifuges and transfer pumps, which meet hygiene standards and are corrosion-resistant.
  • Medical equipment, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment, is used due to its non-magnetic and corrosion-resistant properties.
